Ruby Holler

By Sharon Creech

  1. What a sad, yet happy, book! I felt so sorry for Dallas and Florida throughout this book. I was also inspired by the way Tiller and Sairy treated the kids- their endless patience, love and encouragement was amazing. I loved Florida's quick wit and sarcastic comments, and I found Dallas's clumsiness just as endearing.

    Some questions for discussion:

*How does Florida change over the course of the book? What are some examples of things she said (or did) at the end of the book that she would not have said (or done) at the beginning?

*Do you think Z will become closer to the twins in the future?

*Would you like to live in Ruby Holler? Why or why not?

*If you could give the twins one piece of advice, what would it be?

*How is Florida like Tiller, and Dallas like Sairy? How are they different?

*Of the four main characters, which is the most like you? How?

  2. This is one of my sisters favorite book and I think it is stealing my heart as well. This was a heartfelt yet entertaining book. I thought it was funny when Dallas and Sairy were hiking and they kept forgetting their suplies. I almost had a heartattak myself when tiller had water sprouting out of his mouth. Please excuse my spelling it is my worst subject. See you at the first meeting!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Elizabeth-
I loved this book. I started to cry when Tiller had the water coming out of his mouth- what a suspenseful part of the book! Which character did you like the best? Florida really made me laugh.

    2. Florda also made me laugh me,Marion, and Georgia now use the word "putrid" every chance we get. My favorite charactor would have to be Sarah because she is so forgiving all the time like when Dallas breaks the boat she pretends like nothing happened I hope I can be like that one day.

    3. Elizabeth,
I loved that Sairy was so forgiving, too. I think that I am pretty patient, but there are times when I wish that I could be even more patient and forgiving. This is a good goal for all of us to work toward! I also love the word putrid. My second time reading this book I realized how often Florida said this word, and then Tiller starts using it too which made me laugh. What a great adjective!

    4. I am almost done with another book by Sharon Creech called "Chasing Redbird". I feel like she writes with a style that just twists your feelings untill you don't no if it wants to make you cry or grin. I would love to live in Ruby Holler with the lusch green grass and the clear streams.

    5. Elizabeth,
I have not yet read "Chasing Redbird" I will have to do that. I did love Creech's writing. I did both laugh and cry while I read "Ruby Holler!" I like books that make me get attached enough to the characters to effect my emotions. I don't think I would like to live in Ruby Holler because I like having electricity! I like having light to read by every night. I would not miss TV though.

  3. Yes I think that Z will be closer to the twins in the future because at the end of the book when Tillers boat flips over and Z has to come recsue him Tiller and Florida. Z finds out that his wife had the babies the winter when she left. When he find out he is deffintally shocked. He wants to care for his kids. Of the four main characters in the book then I would choose Florida. Not because she is a girl but because she breaks lots of stuff that she tries to fix like the boat she sort of fixed but messed up at same time.

    1. Marion- So do you break a lot of things like Florida? What do you do when you break something? I think Z will be closer to the twins too, I was glad that they found someone else who will care about them.

    2. I agree with you that the twins will be happier with Tiller and Sairy because imangine what their life would be without them. Some of the things that the twins wouldn't be able to do is make some money. Or eat the peach yougurt/ice cream for breakfast to get their night mares away. Have you ever had a nightmare and had to eat ice cream for breakfast. That would be really cool to be all hyped up and get your day off to a sugary start.

    1. Georgia,
It would be nice to live somewhere so pretty, but I'd miss having lights! I do like to sit outside and read, but I hate how it gets dark so early. I need the light to read by every night!

  5. I owuld want to live in Ruby Holler because I'm that type of person that doesn't like a lot of noise and crazy city stuff. I wanna be able to go outside without hearing anyone going crazy :P.
Abd plus when I read about it I said "O.O...I wanna live there soooooooooooooooo badly! They are so lucky!". When I grow up, I might just build a house like that and move there and have a happy life. I wouldn't even care about anything else.

    1. Tiana,
I don't like to hear a lot of city noise either. When I was in college I lived in the dorm on a busy street right by a hospital. I was woken up many nights by ambulances and police cars and other traffic noises. YUCK! Now I live on a nice quiet street. But not as far away as Ruby Holler and I do have electricity (thank goodness!)

  6. I thought this book was awesome. My favorite character was Dallas because he is very open-minded and didn't really care what people thought of him. I do think Z will become closer to the twins.
