How to Steal a Dog

By Barbara O'Connor

  1. I read this book over the weekend and really enjoyed it! My favorite character was Georgina, because she was energetic and dedicated to trying to help her family. Parts of this book were very funny- and I was satisfied in the end when Georgina came clean about what she'd done. Some questions for discussion:

Why do you think Georgina steals a dog, even though she knows it is wrong? Do you think her reasons for stealing the dog justified what she did?

I thought that Mookie's motto "sometimes the trail you leave behind you is more important than the path ahead of you" was interesting and meaningful. How do you think this motto can be applied to your life?

Why do you think Carmella continues to be nice to Georgina after she learns the truth about Willy? What do you think this says about Carmella's character?

If you had been in Georgina's situation, would you have taken Willy? Why or why not? If not, what would you do to help your family instead?

  2. This was an awesome book I couldn't put it down. I think that Georgina was plain wrong to steal the dog. But I also understand why she did it. I mean if I was living in a car. I would propbably steal a dog to. Even if Georgina hadn't stolen the dog her mom still would have found the house with the coffee shop.

    1. Elizabeth,
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! I also enjoyed this book, mainly because the characters were so likeable and humorous! Stealing is wrong, but I agree with you that someone may act differently if they were as desperate as Georgina. Were you surprised that Georgina admitted what she'd done when she could have gotten away with it? How did you feel when reading about her confession?

    2. i agree with you Elizabeth, i didnt get to read much but Jernay let me read her book and the first few pages i got lost in the book!i would feel the same way i lived in a car!I hope you can make it to the next meeting!!k

    3. I wasn't very surprised when Georgina confessed because you could tell from the beginning that all that quesiness and guilt built up and I could tell she just couldn't go through with the plan.

    4. Jenni-
We missed you the other week! Glad you made it to the next meeting. This book definitely gets your attention right away. Have you finished it now? Were you surprised at the ending?

      Elizabeth-
There were many clues that Georgina was feeling guilty. She seems like a good person who just made a bad choice (but for good reason- she was trying to help). I figured she would admit what she had done since she does seem like a caring and kind person. But it is hard to admit when we make mistakes!

  3. i think the book how to steal a dog is good because they stole a dog but they thought the dog owner was rich but she was not but at the end they did the right thing.Gonzalo

    1. Gonzalo,
I was glad that they did the right thing at the end. What did you think about Carmella? How did you feel about her character after Georgina told her the truth? I was surprised that she forgave Georgina so quickly. If someone stole my cat, I don't think I could forgive them that easily! But I'm not rich, and I couldn't offer a $500 reward for my cat either.

    2. Glad you ladies are both too honest for this! This book shows how one little choice or one small lie can turn into a big problem. This is why we should always tell the truth. Have you ever told a lie that got you into trouble?

It would be so hard to live in a car. This book made me so grateful for what I have. Many of the books for Battle of the Books made me thankful for what I have. Did any of the other books make you thankful? How?

  8. I LIKE THIS BOOK SO MUCH! IF I WHERE GEORGENA I WOULD STEEL THE DOG EVEN THOUGH IT IS TRUE THAT IT IS WRONG IT WILL HELP MY FAMILY GET MONEY FOR AN APARTMENT INSTED OF A CAR. BUT I WOULD NOT TELL MY BROTHER BECAUSE THAT COULD BE A SUPER BIG RISK. IF I DID NOT THEN I WOULD GO TO THE SALVATION ARMY AND ASK FOR DONATIONS.

    2. Georgia,

I like your idea about going to the Salvation Army. We are fortunate to live in an area where we have people who are willing to help us when we need help. I have found that when I have a problem, there are usually people around who are willing to help me.
I really love my little dog. I would be so upset if someone stole her. I wouldn't want to make anyone feel that terrible. I can't imagine how terrible Carmella felt when her dog was missing :(

  11. Hi Anonymous, I mean Gonzalo :)

I'm glad you want to be an expert on "How To Steal A Dog". I enjoyed the book too. I'm curious, what part of the book did you think was funny? I felt stressed for Georgina. I think Georgina put herself in a very stressful situation.

  12. i think because she wanted the dog and i don't think she had money to buy so she stole a dog. and yes because she was stealing a dog and that's justified.
