Because of Winn-Dixie

By Kate Dicamillo

47 comments:

  1. I couldn't put this book down and stayed up way too late reading it! I laughed out loud at the part where Opal meets the librarian. I thought it was so funny when the librarian thought Winn-Dixie was a bear! I also really enjoyed the librarian's story of the bear in the library. I think I liked this part so much because I am a librarian and I love to read about librarian characters in books.

    Some questions for discussion:

*What made you laugh in this book? Why?

*How is Opal's mother an important character in the book even though she never appears?

*What decisions does Opal make that end up changing her life?

*Why do you think Opal want to know ten things about her mom? Do you think ten things can really describe a whole person?

*What do Opal and her dad get from having Winn-Dixie? Why do you think the title of this book is "Because of Winn-Dixie"?

  2. I thought this book was funny and had a really good moral. I'm was really glad that Opal made some new friends, even some that weren't her age. I think this book is titled Because of Winn-Dixie because Winn-Dixie changed so much for Opal I mean he even changed the ralationship between her and her dad.

    1. This book had some great morals and really made me think about how I'd react to some of the situations in the book. It is hard to make new friends- this is something that I still have to work hard to do sometimes. How do you make friends? Is it easy or hard for you?

    2. I think it is hard for me to find best friends but it is in the middle of easy and hard. I make friends by finding things in commen so that we can have something to talk about.

    3. Elizabeth,
Finding things that you have in common with a person is important when you want to be their friend. I also like to be friends with people who can teach me about things that they like or they are good at that I might not be. What things do you and your friends talk about?

  3. Opal and her dad get love from Winn-dixe. Winn- dixi also gets Opal a new friend. I think that the book is called Because of Winn- Dixi because the book is mostly about Winn- Dixi. Also what made me laugh was also when the librarian thought that Winn- Dixi was a bear because the librarian it said in the book that she was short because she was old and Winn- Dixi is tall.

I laughed so hard when the librarian talked about the bear! I loved the librarian's character. I wonder if students feel as comfortable coming to me as Opal does when she goes to the library- I hope so! Is there a teacher or adult in your life who has helped you get through a tough time?

This book was very funny- and very sad- in parts. That is a good question. I also wonder what the lozenges would taste like for me. What do you think they would taste like?

I agree. I think this was the best way Opal could think of to get to know her mom and see how they were alike and different. It made me think about how well we could know someone by hearing ten different things. If someone asked about you, what ten things would you tell them about yourself to get to know you better?

      4. You don't want me around, I kill you with kindness.
      5. I love Michael Jackson.
      6. I love Chris Brown.
      7. I'm very Open- Minded.

It is a very funny book in parts, but I also thought some parts were very sad too! I cried the first time I read this when they thought Winn-Dixie was gone! I also thought several parts where Opal talked about missing her mom were very sad. But Winn-Dixie definitely lightened the mood of the book most of the time! Do you have a pet? Who cheers you up when you are sad?

  9. Opal wants to know ten things of her mom because she didnt saw her when she was a baby or when she was Growing and yes you can tell ten things of a person only if you explanie it right and correct.

  12. It made me laugh when the librarian told the story about the bear. Sorry I am blogging so late, we went on a family vacation so I have not had that much time. I think Opal's mom is very important because it's like her "presence" is helping Opal and her Dad come closer together. This book will always have a special place in my heart.

  13. This book was really funny. My favorite part in the book was when Opal called the Dewberry boys bald headed babies because I call my brothers babies because they cry a lot and not bald because they aren't bald. By the way I 'm really sorry that this is late.

I'm glad you did your blog even if it is a little late! Do your brothers call you names back? I was able to visualize the Dewberry boys through Opal's teasing and description of the two. I was glad that they all learned to get along in the end though!

When she talking about the bear it reminded me of when I was little, I saw this dog when I lived in Randleman and I thought it was a fox. So now, everytime we go by it we look for the fox dog...but, I think it died or got sold :(
