A Dog's Life: The Autobiography of a Stray

By Ann M. Martin

  1. I usually enjoy books that are told in an animal's perspective, and this book was no different. I loved it- although it brought tears to my eyes more than once. Although I'm more of a cat person, I do love dogs and the thought of any stray animal makes me sad. I loved reading about all of Squirrel's adventures and it was funny to hear what a dog might think about certain things that people do (such as going trick or treating).

    Some questions for discussion:

What lessons did Mother teach Bone and Squirrel? How did these lessons help them? Did the lessons ever hurt them?

What do you think happened to Mother? If you had been Squirrel, would you have gone out to look for her? Why?

How do you feel about Marcy and George and the way they treated Squirrel? What about the Beckers?

What do you think it means to be "loyal"? How did Squirrel show loyalty to Bone? To Moon? To the Beckers? To Susan? If you have a pet, how does it show loyalty to you?

In the last chapter, Squirrel states, "I didn't think I needed a human any more than Susan thought she needed a dog." In what ways do the "two old ladies" need each other?

That is very brave of you. But what if you get lost or hurt too?

  3. This is Ms. Coleman. I really enjoyed reading about the two "old ladies" in the last chapter of this book. I have a little dog named Josie. She is my "baby girl". I hope that I have as much spunk as Susan when I'm an "old lady". I'm glad that Susan and Squirrel found each other.

  4. I think that Marcy and George were very different people. Marcy wanted to keep the dogs and even though she was strict at least she had a good heart. George on the other hand is very ithink the appropriate word would be rude. I mean first he critisizes the dogs and then he just literally throws them out on the street. I will not call George out for not wanting a dog though because some people simply do not like then and nobody cn change who they are. Now the Beckers are a totally different story even though the children had love for Squirrel they almost I would say used her because obviously they gt a dog every summer henseforth the Beckers calling Squirrel "the summer dog." The Beckers forgetting Squirrel just shows how irresponcible they really are. Mrs.Coleman I also enjoyed reading about "the two old ladies".

    1. Elizabeth,
I do not like dogs, but I still wouldn't treat a dog as badly as some of the characters in this story. You did a great job describing the characters. Do you know anyone like Marcy? Someone who is maybe strict at times, but has a good heart and means well?

    1. Lindey,
Poor Squirrel. I was so mad when the mom disappeared. How did the woman treat the dog kind of well? What did she do differently from George?

  7. I think that she got killed by Mine. I predicted that because they are enemies.Or she just ran away because some dogs have to do that because mother is wild and wants them to learn. Because it said that the mother got food for them and Squirrel and Bone need to get their own food

    1. Marion,
Good predictions. It was sad when the mom left. There are so many books with characters that are missing one (or both) parents. These books make me appreciate my family even more!

  8. when bone and squrril went with marcy and george they where only 1/2 loveed. i said 1/2 loved because marcy loves bone and squrril while george despises them. marcy also is not a good owner for puppys and dogs. she locked bone and squrril in a closet. the deckers just plain abandond their dog.
