Poppy

  1. I enjoyed reading this book- it reminded me a lot of "The World According to Humphrey." That book is told from the perspective of a hamster, and Poppy is told from the point of view of a mouse. It is interesting to think about the different challenges and thoughts such a tiny creature might have.

    Some questions for discussion:

*Why do you think Poppy's parents trust Mr. Ocax?

*Do you think Lungwort is a good father? What are his strengths and weaknesses?

*Poppy and Ragweed are criticized for being curious and asking questions. Do you think that being curious and questioning things is a good or bad?

*What did you think of Mr. Ocax's character after he spoke his dying words? Did this make you feel differently about his character?

*Do you think Poppy would be a good leader of the whole family? Why or why not?

  2. I liked this book I think that it was kind of sad because I am kind of sad for Mr. Ocax even though he did a bad thing. it is still sad that he had to pass on. I bet he was thrown off by the whole owl being fake thing poor guy. I never would have predicted that Poppy would come out a brave fighter that was a surprising ending. Well I'm glad that the mice can now move and eat. See you at the first meeting!!!!!!!!!

It was sad when Mr. Ocax died. I didn't like his character, but I was still shocked when that happened! I was glad that the family could move and eat too. I don't think I'd ever be as brave as Poppy, do you?

    2. I don't think I could ever be as brave as Poppy. I mean if it came down to family I could probably be 3/4 that brave. I think Poppy would make a good leader of the family because she is good at reasoning with people and if there was another family problem she could be brave and courages enough to fix it.

    3. Elizabeth,
3/4 that brave is still pretty brave! I'm not very brave at all! I don't think I could ever be even 1/4 as brave as Poppy is. But like you said, maybe if it came down to protecting my family I would be braver than I think I am! Reasoning skills are definitely important for any leader. Do you feel that you are a good leader?

  3. 3 words: best book yet. I that it is wrong to say that you can not say any questions or be curious ,so I think that it is great to say these things to someone who has the answer to the question or the curiousness . see you tomorrow!

Four words: I loved it too! I also appreciate people that are curious and ask questions. I like when students ask questions because I feel like they are interested in learning and want to know about a topic. Curiosity can get you into trouble though sometimes! Did you have any questions about this book?

1.How do you think the book would be if the story was in the third person?
2.Do you think that poppy started building her confidentce for her whole family?was there one proticulor family member? Or did she do it for her self?

I think she would be a good leader too. Do you think you are a good leader? I think I have become a better leader as I got older. I used to be very shy and quiet, but now I'm more comfortable being in front of others.

I think that Poppy would be a good leader, too. What qualities do you think a person should have to be a good leader? I think a good leader needs to be kind and caring about others.

  6. I really like this book, but I didn't get a because it says Mr.Ocax dies but it says that Poppy gets eaten by him but she dosen't. I think he's not really dead because when a creater or humman dies there eyes stay open and in the book it says that he slowly closes his eyes. I think Poppy's parents trust Mr.Ocax because he is bigger than them and he can eat them and he sees things they can't and i really don't think they trust him but scared of him!

We will have to talk about your confusion at the next meeting. Mr. Ocax died and Poppy lived until the end. I think Poppy's parents are scared of Mr. Ocax too. But I think Poppy's dad trusts Mr. Ocax. It seems like he wants to do what Mr. Ocax asks because he thinks it is fair that he asks them to do these things.

Leaders do need to know what to do- or at least make some good guesses about what they think is best! What do you do to be a leader at school?

You are also a leader by participating in Battle of the Books! :) And I have also seen you help other students when they need it- this makes a good leader too! I'm glad that you are such a great leader. Following directions and listening will get you far in school. Keep it up!

In what ways are you a leader at school? What about at home? We do have "Poppy and Rye" in our school's library. Come check it out sometime!

    1. Luna,
If I was a mouse I don't think I could ever trust an owl. Who do you trust and why do you feel you can trust these people? What do they do to make you trust them?

    1. Ethan,
It is great that you help other students. Being on this team is also a great way to be a leader. Cleaning up, following directions, and doing your best work can also be important for being a good leader. I think I will try to make another blog for other students- let's leave this one just for our team but thanks for the idea! :)

  12. Poppy's parents trust Mr.Ocakx because he protects the mice from porcupines.

    1. Marion,
Do you think he really does this? Or does he just say he does to trick the mice and be able to know their every move? Do you think the porcupines would really hurt the mice?
